How to Get the Most Out of Your Session
Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, there’s something sacred about documenting the season of growing new life. A maternity session isn’t just about the bump it’s about the connection between you and the little one you’re waiting on, the love already woven into your family, and the beauty of your motherhood in this moment.
If you’ve booked a maternity session with me or you’re just considering one... here’s everything you need to know to feel prepared, comfortable, and confident going in.
When to Schedule Your Session
The sweet spot for maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks. At this stage, your bump is usually nice and round, but you’re still feeling comfortable enough to move around easily. If you’re carrying multiples or have specific timing concerns, we can always adjust!
Choosing the Right Location
I offer both studio and outdoor sessions — each with its own vibe:
• Studio: Soft, simple, and timeless. We’ll lean into natural light, soft textures, and quiet moments that feel beautifully intimate.
• Outdoor: Think golden hour glow, open skies, and a little more movement. These sessions are perfect for families with toddlers or anyone wanting a more natural, relaxed feel.
Not sure what suits you best? I’m always happy to help you decide.
What to wear
You don’t have to shop or stress I have a small curated client closet just for mamas, with soft neutrals and flattering silhouettes designed to photograph beautifully on every body. You’re welcome to come try things on, or I can send suggestions based on your size and style.
If you’re bringing your partner or kiddos, I always recommend starting with your outfit first, and then building theirs around it with neutral, earthy or light tones and simple textures. I’m here to help with styling, so feel free to send me photos or questions!
Prepping the Day Of
• Drink water and have a light meal or snack before the session, low energy or a grumbly stomach never photograph well 😉
• If you’re doing outdoor photos, consider bug spray or a hydrating mist, especially in warmer months. I always try to have a portable fan but keep the weather in mind!
• Don’t stress about hair or makeup being perfect. A little wind or movement often adds to the magic. You looking like you, glowing and present, is always the goal.
What the Session Is Like
You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. I’ll gently guide you the whole time so it feels natural and never forced. Most of the session is us moving slowly, talking, and capturing honest, quiet & cutesy moments... the way your hand rests on your belly, the way your partner looks at you, the tiny ways your family is already making room for baby.
We’ll take breaks as needed, keep things relaxed, and make sure you feel beautiful and seen.
When You'll Get Your Images
I know how exciting it is to see your photos, especially in a season like this! My typical turnaround time is 2 weeks, and you’ll receive an online gallery where you can download and share your favorites.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need to do anything special to be “ready” for a maternity session. You already are, in this fleeting chapter that deserves to be remembered. <3
I consider it such a gift to document this part of your story. If you have any questions at all, my inbox is always open.
And if you’re feeling that little nudge to get your maternity session on the calendar, I’d love to chat with you and we’ll find the perfect time and place to make those memories!
